Scott P. Sutherland, CFA
Scott is a Managing Director and founding member of THA with more than 30 years of experience working with technology companies as a Wall Street analyst and investment banker. Through 20 years as a technology analyst, Scott has built numerous relationships with executives and key business leaders throughout the technology industry, namely in the mobile and Internet sectors, seeing many companies through the IPO process and M&A. In the more than three years as an investment banker, Scott has successfully executed numerous transactions due to his deep executive relationships and knowledge of the sector.
Before founding THA, Scott was a Managing Director at Ridgecrest Capital Partners, where he focused on mobile, communications, and Internet M&A. With RCP, he successfully completed numerous transactions with leading technology companies including Synchronoss, ORBCOMM, Numerex, Taqua, and others. Prior to RCP, Scott worked as a sell-side equity analyst for 13+ years at Wedbush Securities covering publicly-listed technology companies in the mobile, communications, and Internet sectors with a focus on firms delivering wireless data, content delivery, location, premium messaging, and BSS/OSS solutions. During his tenure at Wedbush, Scott oversaw the buildout of the TMT research group from himself to over 12 analysts covering over 150 companies. Scott was twice a top 10 analyst out of all North American analysts. In 2004, Mr. Sutherland was recognized as the Third Best Stock Picker in North America among over 3,200 analysts in 2003 according to StarMine and highlighted in Forbes and Buyside. In June 2010, Mr. Sutherland once again ranked in the top 10 overall, placing ninth for stock picking and earnings accuracy out of 2,700 analysts for the three-year period ending March 31, 2010 according to Zacks Investment Research. Mr. Sutherland has been active in the media including CNBC, CNN, Barron’s, Forbes, WSJ, and IBD. Prior to Wedbush, Scott spent 6+ years as a buy-side equity analyst covering the technology and consumer products sectors at Bjurman & Associates, overseeing the company’s quantitative and qualitative research. Scott also spent two years as Bjurman’s IT Director.
Scott holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and is a CFA charter holder. He resides Marin, California, is active in several non-profit organizations, and in his spare time enjoys surfing, skiing, sailing, biking, triathlons, hiking, travel and cooking.
